Chicony Power Collaborates with TI to Deliver New Energy-Efficient Laptop Power Adapter Design with Integrated GaN

Chicony Power achieved high power density and up to 94% efficiency in their latest laptop power adapter design backed by TI's dual-chip GaN active clamp flyback solution

 

Chicony Power (TWSE: 6412) today announced its collaboration with Texas Instruments (TI) to roll out Chicony Power's latest 65W laptop power adapter, Le Petit, featuring TI's GaN technology. Leveraging TI's half-bridge GaN FET with integrated gate driver, LMG2610, Chicony Power reduced the size of its 65W power adapter by 50% and increased up to 94% power efficiency compared to other 65W adaptors in the market, raising the bar for the laptop power industry.

As a leading power supply provider, Chicony Power's long-term focus is on smart energy-saving solutions and improving power conversion efficiency in electronic power supply design. Chicony Power teamed up with TI for its expertise in high-voltage design and its integrated GaN technology. TI's LMG2610 is designed to be paired with the UCC28780/ UCC28782 active clamp flyback (ACF) controllers to create an easy-to-use, high-efficiency and high power-density solution for AC/DC designs under 75 W. Chicony Power leverages TI's industry leading integrated GaN technology with active clamp flyback (ACF) controller to enable a whole new world of power supply through this collaboration.

 

Improved Power Conversion Efficiency

In recent years, extreme weather events led to power shortages and raised awareness of the importance of energy-savings. Increasingly, consumers are seeking smaller and lighter electronics while also wanting to reduce their energy footprint. This has challenged engineers to find new ways to pack more power in smaller spaces while minimizing power loss to deliver more efficient adapters.

Besides improving power conversion efficiency, Chicony Power's 3D structure, component miniaturization, heat dissipation system, and EMI suppression design expertise, coupled with the advantages of TI's integrated GaN solution, enabled Chicony to design a simpler and smaller power supply while also reducing bill-of-materials (BOM) and cost. Chicony Power and TI were able to miniaturize the power adapter and lower the use of mechanical materials by 40%, resulting in a compact size of 49 cm3 which is half of the 65W power adopters in the market and achieves full compliance with consumer safety regulations. TI's LMG2610 and UCC28782 active clamp flyback (ACF) controllers include built-in current-sensing simulation, which eliminates external shunt resistance and its associated power dissipation. Compared with the 89% efficiency achieved by typical power adapters using silicon materials, the Le Petit power supply conversion efficiency is as high as 94%, setting a new bar for the laptop power supply industry.

Addressing Thermal and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Challenges with a Smaller Size

In addition to power efficiency and size advantages delivered by TI's integrated GaN technology, the UCC28780 and UCC28782 flyback controllers support high-frequency zero-voltage switching (ZVS) design. Combined with Chicony Power's power design expertise, Chicony Power's designers were able to overcome temperature increases and rise in electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by the increase of frequency in lightweight power supplies, effectively reducing the size of the power adapter while maintaining temperature and performance control.
